and sadness. john kerry in his role as chairman of the senate foreign relations committee was leading the senate as the floor manager of a treaty. on the other side of the aisle, the senior republican on the foreign relations committee rose, not in opposition but in support of that same treaty. richard lugar and john kerry got 61 votes in the senate today for ratification of a united nations treaty on the rights of the disabled, which was modeled on a law passed by the senate. 22 years ago, the americans with disabilities act. in effect, it was a vote to export american law to the 155 nations around the world that have signed this treaty. a treaty that has already been ratified by 126 of those countries, including the united kingdom, france, germany, china, russia has ratified it. now you can pass anything in the senate with 60 votes. except treaties which require 66. a two-thirds majority. every democrat voted for the treaty and only eight republicans voted for the treaty. 38 republicans disgraced themselves and disgraced the senate. by voting against it and controlling the outcome.

was reading that politico story today. they pointed out, they talked to people like john kerry who said, no. this doesn't happen. bush and i haven't spoken since he won. we, of course, had plans to meet. never happened. mondale said we never sat down for this kind of conversation with reagan. i was going through some of these past rivalry moments. and, i mean, it's really hard to put politics aside when you've been arguing so viciously with someone for a year, maybe more. maybe even two terms of arguing. i was reading a great cindy adams post in the post. she was talking about how when fdr beat dewey he immediately turned to his aide and said i still think he's an s.o.b. when nixon's wife died he complained that bill clinton, quote, came to me for advice to save his bottom and couldn't even send a cabinet member to pat's funeral. these are relationships forged around rivalries. i think it's impossible to expect, especially these two, to move forward and have a lunch. it's weird. >> yeah. they seem to really actually have total contempt and disdain for one another. which is different than, y

to get the secretary of state job. she says she would much prefer senator john kerry for that job. because, yeah, he's never been a politician. or presumably, she's still okay with the current secretary of state, hillary clinton. it's not like she's ever run for anything. you know, obviously she's never been on a sunday show. if she had been on a sunday show, she'd ever gone on a sunday show, that obviously would have disqualified her from becoming secretary of state. that would show her to be behaving in a political fashion. everybody knows the secretary of state cannot do anything political. seriously? there is a mismatch between the seriousness of the things that we actually need to get done as a nation and the quality of the system in washington that is the means by which we must get those things done. syria is not our war, and syria is not going to be our war. but there are tens of thousands of people dead there already. and the regime there appears to have just turned off the lights, pulled the plug, disconnected that country entirely from the eyes of the world. what are we
